Many people have sought to improve the appearance of their skin using Ultherapy, touted as a non-invasive cosmetic procedure. The procedure is performed by many skincare and cosmetic surgery clinics across the country, offering to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles while lifting the skin without surgery by enhancing collagen production. Unfortunately, there are those who have undergone this procedure and now are living with nerve and skin damage. At Harman Law Firm, we are seeking justice for these patients who have been injured by defective drugs and medical devices.

Ultherapy is a product of Ulthera, Inc. and has been “FDA-cleared” as a cosmetic medical device. However, this does not mean this medical device needed to undergo years of testing for safety. The application for the Ulthera System is submitted under the FDA 510(k), which allows a medical device to be marketed without approval as it is equivalent to a previously approved device, foregoing the testing that many assume occurred with an “FDA-cleared” device.

Ultherapy Facial Nerve Damage/Injury

Patients that used Ultherapy were assured this was a safe cosmetic procedure, a non-surgical facelift with little to no downtime and minimal side effects. The side effects listed on the Ulthera, Inc. website state a slight redness, tingling, swelling or tenderness that only lasts a few hours. They report that less common side effects include temporary numbness, bruising and scarring.

Nerve effects from inflammation of the nerves include numbness, tingling and itching. However, Ulthera claims these dissipate within a few days up to five weeks. What some patients are experiencing is beyond “temporary” nerve effects. Many patients are complaining of permanent and severe nerve damage to the area treated, including ongoing pain, numbness and tingling. Others have reported scarring and disfigurement to their skin and underlying fat tissue.

Still other patients who underwent Ultherapy have reported an aged and “sunken” appearance in their face. These patients report that Ultherapy destroyed the fat that previously made gave their faces a full and youthful appearance.
