Researchers have determined that use of fluoroquinolones could double your risk of suffering an aortic aneurysm.  Aortic aneurysm is a potentially life-threatening condition that may be caused by the side effects of fluoroquinolone antibiotics.  Aortic dissection risks are also increased with use of these medications.

Fluoquinolone medications include:

  • Levaquin – scientific name levofloxacin
  • Cipro – scientific name cirprofloxacin
  • Avelox – scientific name moxifloxacin
  • Noroxin – scientific name norfloxacin
  • Floxin – scientific name ofloxacin
  • Factive – scientific name gemifloxican

In the United States, there are an average of 15,000 aortic aneurysm related deaths reported annually. The number has steadily increased over the course of several decades. Connective tissue and congenital disorders account increase normal risk factors for aneurysm ruptures and dissections.

A study was conducted to determine the relevance and correlation between fluoroquinolones and aortic aneurysms. Of those studied, a “2-fold increase of risk of aortic aneurysm and dissection within 60 days of exposure”, as noted by Med Page Today, showed fluoroquinolones use as a common factor among participants.

Side effects and serious medical events can occur up to at least 12-months after using these medications. Researchers stated that physicians should remain diligent in monitoring high-risk patients that are being or have been treated with fluoroquinolone medications.

Fluoroquinolone medications are connected with several other serious medical conditions, including tendon rupture and peripheral neuropathy.  The FDA recently added a “Black box” warning to flouroquinolone medications.  A black box warning is the FDA’s strongest drug warning.  The FDA now recommends that  flouroquinolones like Levaquin, Cipro, and Avolox should only be used for serious infectious diseases like Anthrax and Plague.
