Common over-the-counter (OTC) heartburn medications like Prilosec, Prevacid, and Nexium are linked to increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease. These drugs are known as proton pump inhibitors (PPI). The OTC heartburn medicine is used to tame heartburn and reduce acid reflux.
Those who use heartburn medications like Nexium, Prilosec, and Prevacid increase their risk of kidney disease by 20-percent to 50-percent. The increased risk disclosed following a recent study, published January 11, 2016 in JAMA Internal Medicine, led by Dr. Morgan Grams of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, according to a report by CBS News. “We found there was an increasing risk associated with an increasing dose. That suggests that perhaps this observed effect is real,” Dr. Grams said.
Facts from the study:
- 70-percent of heartburn/acid reflux prescriptions inappropriately prescribed
- 25-percent of those taking this medication long-term can stop use without increased symptoms
- 15-million Americans used PPI medications in 2013
- Data from 10,000 artery hardening study participants was studied
- Researchers considered information from 250,000 outpatient PPI prescription users in Pennsylvania
Twice daily use of PPI medications can be associated with a 46-percent increased risk factor for developing chronic kidney disease. This is decreased to 15-percent for those who use the medication daily.
Researchers believe that decreasing levels of magnesium from taking the medication can damage the kidneys over time. Magnesium is a vital mineral to the body, especially the kidneys. Acute kidney inflammation is another potential diagnoses with prolonged use of PPI medication.
The study conducted is not classified as a clinical trial, meaning that its contents are suggestive and are issued as a warning regarding the dangers of taking PPI medication over a long-term period of time. It is suggested that those using OTC heartburn medicine on a daily, or frequent basis refrain from doing so. The medication should only be used when it is absolutely needed, according to medical experts.
