Roundup, a popular weed killer, manufactured by Monsanto has had attention drawn to the company and product recently. Medical studies conclude that the chemical is linked to inhaled and skin exposure injuries in combination with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Other injuries have also been reported.
The main ingredient in Roundup, Glyphosate, is the suspected problem. Plant matter, such as weeds, become resistant to the chemical. This leads to more of the chemical being required to kill weeds. It is noted that increased use of the chemical in turn, increases the risk of medical injury.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has labeled Monsanto’s Roundup as a probable carcinogen. Multiple studies have been conducted to solidify the link between Roundup and certain types of cancer.
Following these reports, the EPA has said that it will reevaluate the prior approval of the dangerous herbicide.
Additional risks to be aware of with Roundup use:
- Multiple myelomas
- Blood cell cancers like leukemia
- Lymph cell cancers, such as Non-Hodgkins and Hodgkins Lymphomas
- Spina Bifida
- Synovial Sarcoma
- Soft tissue sarcomas
- Cancers of the neck, tongue and esophagus
- Oral cavity cancers
- Throat and/or thyroid cancers
- Fibrosarcoma
Those with prolonged exposure to Roundup, such as those working in the farming or landscaping industries, are considered to be at elevated risk at this time. It is suggested that all consumers wash vegetables prior to preparing them for a meal to reduce accidental ingestion of horticultural and agricultural chemicals.
