Benicar, also known as olmesartan, has been linked to dangerous side effects in patients nationwide. The drug is manufactured by Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Laboratories. Daiichi Sankyo is based in Japan. The serious side effects were experienced while maintaining proper dosages of the drug.
The warning also applies to Benicar HT, Tribenzor and Azor. These medications are used to treat high blood pressure. It is designed to block angiotensin receptors. The main receptor that is affected is angiotensin II, which causes the blood vessels to constrict. The constriction of this hormone causes blood vessels to dilate.
Serious side effects reported include:
- Sprue-like enteropathy – destruction of the intestinal lining
- Villous atrophy – destruction of the intestinal lining
- Lymphocytic/collagenous/microscopic colitis
- Chronic, severe diarrhea with significant weight loss
Much of the significant adverse side effects experienced in Benicar patients resulted in multiple hospitalizations. Some of the most serious cases involve renal failure. Prolonged diarrhea can lead to permanent intestinal damage and dangerous amounts of rapid weight loss. This can lead to malnutrition and the onset of additional medical conditions.
There is not a specific time table of the development of these, and other serious side effects regarding the use of Benicar. In some patients it is within a few months, and in others it is years later. Many patients have filed lawsuits against Benicar and its manufacturers stating that the manufacturer knew of these serious side effects and did not issue a warning or include them in drug description information.
