Following the report of a tenth death associated with Takata air bags, the manufacturer has expanded its recall. Millions of vehicles have been recalled to have defective air bags replaced. It is reported that the devices can spray pieces of metal inside the vehicle.

These manufacturers are part of the current recalls:

  • Ford
  • Honda
  • Daimler AG
  • Audi AG
  • Mazda
  • Saab AG
  • Volkswagen AG
  • BMW AG
  • Mercedes-Benz

The most recent recall is for the replacement of the air bag inflators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working to coordinate the recall action. Industry experts call this issue a massive safety crisis.

Some vehicles have multiple air bag sensors. That being said, Takata has not released an exact number of vehicles to be recalled. The manufacturer has claimed that it continues to diligently test products and is working as quickly as possible to create replacement kits.

Takata is seeking assistance from a rival, Daicel Corporation. Advice is sought from Daicel Corp for options to ensure stable supply of air bag inflators.

Takata, facing financial hardship following the multi-million vehicle recall, may seek financial assistance from car makers to help cover some of the cost. The manufacturer states that it will take years to complete all of the recalls. The highest priority areas are states with high levels of humidity, as humidity is considered to play a role in the spontaneous deployment of the air bags. Areas surrounding the Gulf of Mexico and Puerto Rico are on the high-priority list.

Other vehicles, such as vehicles with older air bag systems are also a higher-risk for spontaneous deployment.

Given the mounting number of recalls and increasing number of fatalities, Takata will appoint an independent monitor. The monitor will oversee the recall process and work to improve operations over a 5-year period of time.
