Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Risk

Talcum powder has been found to cause ovarian cancer. Talcum powder, or Talc, is used by millions of women for personal hygiene.  If you or someone you know developed ovarian cancer after using talc products, contact Harman Law LLC online or at (404) 554-0777 for a free consultation.

In the most recent cases to go to trial, juries have awarded millions of dollars to victims of cancer caused by Johnson & Johnson’s talcum products.  In February, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay the family of Jacqueline Fox $72 million dollars. Of that monetary award, $10 million is for actual damages and $62 million was awarded for punitive damages.  In May, another jury awarded $55 million to plaintiff Gloria Ristesund.  The juries found that talc caused cancer and that Johnson & Johnson knew of the cancer risk and continued selling the products anyway, with no warning.  Over 1,200 lawsuits have now been filed on behalf of women who suffered ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for feminine hygiene.

Talc is a mineral mined in China that absorbs moisture and helps reduce friction. According to a 2016 study in Epidemiology, the risk of ovarian cancer is one-third higher in women who regularly powdered their genitals with talc.

As early as 1971, studies showed am association between talcum powder and ovarian cancer.  In 2006, the Canadian government  classified talc as a “D2A,” “very toxic,” “cancer causing” substance under its Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Other products classified as “D2A” include asbestos.

For years, Johnson & Johnson’s talc supplier, Imerys Talc, has included cancer warnings with the talc it sold to Johnson & Johnson.  Johnson & Johnson, however, has never passed those warnings on to the consumers.
